Susan Stein's New Play - Etty
Salem, CT (June 2008) – The Gilded Edge is pleased to host a special
performance on Friday, June 13th, at 7:00 p.m. by writer and actress Susan Stein who will give
a dramatic reading of Etty, an
original one-woman play. Stein, a former
resident of Marlborough, created Etty based
on the diaries and letters of Etty Hillesum, a Dutch Jew who lived during World War II.
The play is set shortly before Etty is deported to Auschwitz where she is later killed in November
of 1943. Caught in the Nazi's complex "game with human lives," Etty faces an ethical
dilemma as a member of Amsterdam's Jewish Council where she struggles between her instinct to live
and her willingness to die.
Etty's words, insights and beliefs illustrate the power of hope and the strength of the individual
in even the most extreme circumstances. Stein's goal has been to bring Etty’s words to as
many people as possible. In November, she will perform her play for the first time in Europe
during the Etty Hillesum Congress.
Stein will read from her script for about 45 minutes and then entertain questions and feedback.
Wine, cheese and light refreshments will be served. While there is no charge for the presentation,
reservations are required. Please make your reservations by June 11th by calling 860-889-4903
